The Emergence of Goddess Lakshmi
The Devas, gods, and the Asuras, or demons, used to be in perpetual battle as they both were seeking immortality and wanted it for themselves to gain the upper hand. They had to churn the Ocean of Milk, to obtain Amrita, the elixir of immortality, from the cosmic ocean of milk.
Since none of them could achieve what they wanted, both the Gods and the Asuras joined forces and decided to cooperate on the churning, using Vasuki, the kind of serpents, as the rope and Mount Mandara as the churning rod.
After churning the ocean when they became tired, they needed Lord Vishnu’s assistance. He assumed the form of a turtle, also known as Kurma Avatar to hold the mountain on his back. Among the holy objects that erupted from the churning of the milky ocean was the lethal poison Halahala, which Lord Shiva ingested to safeguard the universe.
But the most precious jewel that emerged out of Samudra Manthan was goddess Lakshmi, standing on a lotus blossom, amidst the ocean’s treasures, fully realized and magnificent. She was the epitome of beauty, money, and prosperity, that captivated the Devas and the Asuras.
However, there’s another legend that associates Lakshmi Puja with the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after spending 14 years in exile. Lakshmi Puja is often performed to celebrate his homecoming and victory over evil as people pray and decorate their households with lighted lamps, seeking prosperity and joy.
